28 Dog Years was inspired by my nieces, Hannah and Mary, asking repeatedly "Tell us another story about when you were a little boy, Uncle Greg" and "Can you tell me about your dog Scrappy?" So one year I decided to write down every story I could for them. Soon I realized that these stories had a narrative arc. That's when it became a memoir about  Scrappy and the times we spent on my grandparents' farm.

Once written, I illustrated it with photographs and drawings, had it printed and bound at Kinko's, and gave it to them for Christmas. It was a hit. I also gave copies to my parents and sister. Soon everyone in my father's family wanted a copy. Since he was one of eight children all of whom married and had children, that was a  lot of copies. My wife, Sherrie's, family embraced the little book too.

For my family, it was a parting of the curtains into the lives of the patriarch and matriarch of the family. For the younger generation it is a glimpse into another time and place. For me it is a reminisce and a love story.

Put On Your Boots and Go is also a memoir, but an entirely different kind. This volume collects four stories from across 30 years of my outdoor experiences. From the Grand Cayon to the Southern Appalachians to the Grand Tetons and on to Chilean Patatgonia, it is a story of friends old and new, of miles and miles of trails walked, and of the challenges and accomplishments that have kept me going back again and again.

"Anyone who has ever toted a backpack into the wilderness, or merely dreamed of doing so, will relish the vicarious experience of sharing Greg's physically and mentally demanding travels in this marvelous and thoughtful first book."
